This pair of silent companions, or "dummy boards"
as they are sometimes called is our version of "TOBIAS
AND MATILDA", DUTCH CHILDREN, C. 1620.
They are dressed in typical style of the well to do middle
class of the period, and Tobias wears skirts as did all
young boys of his day.
Matilda carries a basket of apples, and her brother Tobias,
a 17thc. golf club. He appears to be "up to no
good", using one of his sister's apples as a golf ball!
These charming figures were hand made and hand painted by
us in primitive fashion, and we flatter ourselves that they
would be as fine an asset and conversation piece in any home
today, as they would have been 400 years ago!
We take great pride in custom painting all manner of 17th
and 18thc. style "Chimney boards" and "Dummy
boards" for our discerning clients.

A wonderful 18thc. Connecticut bannister back ARMCHAIR. From a private collection, this chair has so much going for it. It was made by one specific chairmaker in Guilford, Ct. in the 18th c. It has a heart crestrail, and “Guilford finials”. It has a wonderful original paint history--- it’s only 2 very old paint colors---original green and then black over the inital dull red primer. It has NO later paint, no replacement parts, and no ending out. Little wooden wheels were added very early in it’s history, and bear traces of both the green and black paint. (Perhaps to wheel Grandma around!) There are 4 reeded bannisters, and the stretchers ride low to the floor. The suface is just excellent----dry, dull old patination. The authentic rush seat is an older replacement, and the chair is quite comfortable to sit in. (Note: the red traces on the chair in the photo appear much brighter due to camera flash. In real life, the red traces visible are very understated, and unobtrusive. The surface of this chair really is terrific). $3900.00

Circa late 18th c. needlework pocket book. Diamond pattern hand stitched in silk on silk. This came from a family in Maine, and it decended down ONLY in that family.
